Comeback Kid

Playwright EDWARD ALBEE, author of the 1962 classic Who's Afraid
of Virginia Woolf?, spent the '70s and '80s as Broadway's pre-eminent
persona non grata. His last New York production opened to derision
in 1983. "It's not a play," wrote one critic, "it's a temper
tantrum in two acts." But last week Albee's fortunes changed
when he won a Pulitzer prize for Three Tall Women. Albee was
in a locker room in Houston when he heard about the august honor,
and he jokes, "I guess you might as well be stark naked when
you learn you've won the Pulitzer."

MILLA JOVOVICH is a model-actress best known for her starring
role in Return to the Blue Lagoon. How easy it would be to scoff
at her foray into singer-songwriterdom. But Milla's debut album,
The Divine Comedy, isn't getting ridiculed; it is getting praised
for her stunning vocals and her dark, intelligent lyrics, all
of which she wrote two years ago at age 16. As mature as her
reflections on heartache were then, Milla has developed an even
wiser perspective now: "It's a long time between 16 and 18.
It's spongy. I've soaked up a lot."

SEEN & HEARD

On a press tour to promote his new autobiography, former Sex
Pistols front man Johnny Rotten, a founding father of punk rock,
became increasingly tired of a persistent line of inquiry: How,
reporters wanted to know, did he feel about the death of second-generation
punker Kurt Cobain? Fed up, Rotten finally offered this sympathetic
retort: "I don't give a f------about Kurt Cobain."

Over the years, Mattel's celebrity-doll line has included miniature
versions of intemperate Beverly Hills 90210 cast member Shannen
Doherty and rapper Hammer. "We look for a positive role model
for girls," explained a spokeswoman for the toy company. Now,
Mattel is immortalizing Nancy Kerrigan in doll form in a deal
made after Kerrigan's post-Olympic displays of ungraciousness.
Included with the mini Nancy: success tips for little girls
and versions of her Vera Wang-designed costumes.

Investigations of Michael Jackson continue. Last week a Santa
Barbara judge extended for 90 days the term of a grand jury
probing molestation charges against the singer.

Just the Way They Aren't

The nine-year marriage of BILLY JOEL and CHRISTIE BRINKLEY has
always seemed much more stable than other rock star-supermodel
alliances. Last week, though, the couple announced that they
have been separated since Thanksgiving. They wanted to keep
the matter private, they said, out of concern for their daughter.
But following a recent Colorado helicopter crash that almost
killed her, Brinkley said, she wanted to simplify her life,
and so no longer wished to keep the separation secret.
